Thomas Hilberg studied Medicine at the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, Germany, and Sports Science at the German Sports University Cologne, Germany, before conducting experimental research at the Haemostasis Research Unit of the Max-Planck-Institute for Physiological and Clinical Research, Germany, after which he received his medical doctorate degree.
Thomas Hilberg subsequently worked in the Department for Preventive and Rehabilitative Sports Medicine, Technical University Munich, Germany and received a PhD, and afterwards as an Assistant Professor in the Department for Sports Medicine, Institute for Sports Science, Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, Germany. Since 2008 he has been a full Professor in, and Chair of, the Department of Sports Medicine, University Wuppertal, Germany.
He is Physician and Specialist in General Medicine and Sports Medicine, and, in addition, he has a comprehensive qualification in osteopathic medicine. His research interests are the relationship of exercise and haemostasis, haemophilia, sports therapy, joint health and pain, and osteopathic medicine. Since more than 20 years, he concentrates his haemophilia-specific research on the topics of “haemophilia and exercise”, “haemophilia and sports therapy”, “haemophilic arthropathy” as well as “pain and haemophilia”.
