David is a Professor of Applied Clinical Research in the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Social Care at Canterbury Christ Church University and Deputy Director of Research and Innovation at East Kent Hospitals University Foundation NHS Trust, where he also co-leads the East Kent Clinical Trials Unit and Clinical Trials Facility. With a strong foundation in allied health professions (AHP) research, he has a proven track record in co-production, clinical trials design, and translating research into real-world impact. He is an experienced clinical scientist with more than 30 years’ clinical experience managing children and adults with haemophilia including 20 years clinical and laboratory research. He is a member of the Musculoskeletal Health Expert Working Group of the IPSG, a past Chair of the Physiotherapy Committee of EAHAD, and currently an Associate Editor of Haemophilia. David is a senior chief investigator and trialist leading a programme of clinical translational research which has informed local, national and international clinical practice. His team has a focus on co-design and implementation of evidence-baased and sustainable practice with a particular interest in the impact of disease on the biomechanical and neuromuscular aspects of physical performance in children and young people, clinical use of wearable technology, pain rehabilitation, point-of-care ultrasound imaging to detect early joint disease, as well as incorporating functional performance as part of routine monitoring of health. Professor Stephensen has a track record in training researchers and post graduate students and mentoring early career researchers, and is passionate about increasing research capacity of the allied health professions and has supervised over 10 clinical research training awards.
