Both elective and emergency surgical procedures may be required throughout life. The availability of factor replacement therapy has allowed for safe and effective surgery in patients with hemophilia. Improved quality of life and physical functioning can be achieved through orthopedic procedures for repair of prior damage caused by hemarthroses and other bleeding complications. Normal hemostasis is required both for the surgical procedures and wound healing. In this presentation we will review the approach to surgery, including pre- and post-operative care. The WFH Guidelines for the Management of Hemophilia will be used for the basis of discussion.
